MARDAN: Hundreds of government schools in the home district of NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti are being run without basic facilities including water, electricity, toilets and boundary walls while more than 2,000 educational institutions are in need of repair, Daily Times learnt on Friday.
A survey report prepared by Education Management Information System (EMIS) of Mardan district for the Year 2008 reveals that majority of 324,340 students and 9,807 teachers from both sexes in a total of 1,616 public sector schools of all tiers in the district face difficulties at schools due to lack of facilities.
The report unveils that mostly primary and middle level schools lack facilities. Out of a total of 767 primary schools for boys, 132 are without water, 297 have not electricity, 172 do not have toilets while 112 have no boundary wall.
Similarly, out of 542 primary schools for girls in the district, 82 are without water, 282 lack electricity, 15 do not have toilets and four schools have no boundary wall.
Furthermore, five boys and eight girls’ middle schools are without water, 16 boys and 29 girls’ middle schools do not have electricity, 15 boys’ middle schools do not have toilets while 21 boy’s middle schools lack boundary walls.
One high school, each for boys and girls, are without power supply and 10 boys’ high schools lack boundary walls, the report says.
The report adds that 713 rooms in boys’ schools and 399 in girls’ institutions need major repairs as these are in dilapidated conditions. Rooms requiring minor repairs include 1,324 and 688 in boys and girls’ schools respectively.
The report also found out more than 100 ghost primary schools in the district which were constructed five to seven years ago but the education department has yet to start classes in these schools.
The education process requires a congenial atmosphere which necessitates provision of certain facilities like water, electricity, toilets, playgrounds, and computer laboratories in schools. But unfortunately majority of students in Mardan are still waiting for these facilities at their educational institutions.
